The Nuclear Family
The "Nuclear" Family is a short commercial spec for the 2010 Swackhamer video contest. The contest topic is:
Shortly after nuclear weapons were first invented, Albert Einstein stated: “The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe.”
1. In what ways does humanity have to change its “modes of thinking” in order to survive and come together?
2. How can we avert the catastrophe that Einstein foresaw?
Based on the guidelines, Angela How came up with a quirky, creative short depicting the devastating toll that war and the fight for power can affect the state of the nuclear family. For the design concept, the basis of the nuclear family is inspired by the seemingly perfect families of the 1950s. Commercials of the time period were the driving force behind the idea and heavily influenced the look of the spec. The homemade weapons were the main focus on this particular project, which can be seen in June's costume sketches drawn below.
